Cheers, mate!

There are a lot of revelations, the older you get: There is no Santa, Easter Bunny or god..., your "Gay-dar" begins to work (I never would have believed... Paul Lynde??? ) and "Kill the Wabbit" was not an Elmer Fudd original, but was instead based on some Germanic musical ditty. More interestingly, Andy Capp becomes a role model.

Firstly, he's eloquent and speaks his mind - also, he makes up for his lack of skills and shortcomings with resourcefulness. His "devil-may-care" attitude might not help him win any popularity contests, but hey... who else won popularity contests besides Marcia Brady?

Secondly, he doesn't understand women any more than the rest of us. In this sissy-ass age of Dr. Phil and that couch jumping "fella" Tom Cruise, harking back to the days when men and women were cut from different jibs once in a while makes us actually more attractive to each other.

Lastly, on behalf of my balls, I'd like to thank him for his patented, and unconventional sleeping style. As any father can tell you, sleeping on the couch with a couple of kids is a risky endeavor, since the young 'uns invariably target the testes as they dash across the living room in your direction.

If that's not enough, he proudly endorses the greatest 'drunk' snack since beernuts. Sure, they're lowbrow and about as nutritious as sand, but in a pinch, there is nothing tastier. Well, maybe a nice Dagwood sandwich, but who's got the time or dexterity to pull that one off at 1 a.m.?

Here's to you, Andy. Sure, you're an unemployed lout, have a tendency to womanize and, worst of all, you're British, but you're all right in my book. Flo is lucky to have you.

We all have a lot we could learn from Mr. Capp. However, you've done an extremely fine job of listing his finest assets. And while I have no rug rats of my own, I do remember targeting my older brothers' 'nads as a fail safe way to get them to stop torturing me. At least for a little while...

My man naps like that, too. And salty food at 1 AM is where it's at.

Maybe I should rethink this Andy Capp character. Jesus, a scarier thought is, have I turned into Flo?

Denny's has a pretty bad ass breakfast dagwood to cure your late night munchies... The bread is excellent, but it's hard to eat the whole thing.

How funny is this, I think of Andy Capp as a role model too. I got so excited because Batavia Downs has an Andy Capp slot machine and the first time I played it I was laughing at all the audios playing on it. Didn't win any money though but I had an enormous craving for beer while I played it. Go figure! Great Site...very funny.

Hi, Michele sent me.

Very funny post and right on target, too. I've always loved Andy Capp because he reminds me of my (English) grandpa but I hadn't thought about it in years - thanks for the reminder.

I detest those hot fries ... I think it's a texture thing, but also because I don't like spicy stuff (except spicy personalities, those are fine). But Andy Capp is hilarious!

Well..thanks for visiting my blog and your kind words, and that link! I am unfamiliar with the Urban Dictionary...I had never heard of it till you broght it to my attention...Who and Where do these definitions come from???
I must say I find that "term", which I've never heard before, mildly offensive...I mean...substitute any other minority and if it's YOUR minority, I don't think you would be too thrilled with it...I'm not talking about 'political correctness'here, I'm talking about racism...many may not agree with me, and that would make me sad because THIS is a derogitory term, plain and simple. I thank you for giving me that link...and I do wonder who the contributors are and what do the thumbs up and down, mean???
Perhaps it says on the site...I should investigate further...

Prego said...

I'm sorry you feel that way. Actually the gay community doesn't feel offended by the term; in fact, they joke that they wish they had one. The ability to ascertain one's sexual preference in itself is not done to be derrogatory. It's what one does with it that defines whether or not offence is intended or taken.

If a gaydar goes off and you've got a mate for life, or perhaps can fix said gay person with a gay friend or relative, cool. If your gaydar goes off and you attack the gay person, then there's troubles.

As a minority, I've been on the receiving end of bigotry, so I'm not likely to dish it out. Thanks for voicing your concerns. I hope we're still on amicable terms, because I enjoy your visits.

love,
p

Yes, of course we are, my dear Prego. You know, I may be overly sensitive to these kinds of things...but... (Always the big BUT, huh??..lol) I've been around the gay community in it's many incarnations forever...and I've NEVER heard this term...Is it used by the younger gay person? I mean I know a lot of young gay people too...and still, I've never heard this term used...And, further...Not to beat a dead horse..BUT..(yes another but)...to my way of thinking, no matter who uses it, like the N word, which is used by African Americans some quite a lot...it is a racist term...where it came from was a degoritory place to start with, said by racist people...This, though possibly not as bad as the N word....(I'm not really sure of that..) still has, to me, a beginning from people who feel prejudice against gay people. Ca you see my point at all?
I am making a small survey of a few gay friends...(nobody is home on this lovely Sunday, asking each if they are familiar with this word or term...
I have no results, as of the moment, but will keep you informed on what I find out...
At the very least Prego, this is a lively and interesting discussion and gives one food for thought...I hope you agree on this one point...

More To Come....
Do tell me how and where the Urban Dictionary came into being??? If you don't mind...
And thanks for the very interesting exchange of ideas, dear Prego...

Prego said...

Semantically speaking, yes it is an interesting discussion, though I find what offends one person may not offend another. I see the point you're making about the possible etymology of the term. Wherever its origin, there is a segment of the gay population that don't have issue with it at all. For instance:

http://www.gaydar.co.uk/
http://www.gaydarradio.com/
http://members.tripod.com/~marco_santoro/
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/gaydar/

Thanks again, Love.

Hi Prego..
Continuing to beat a dead horse here..(Terrible expression, that!) two of the three gentleman I caklled and left messages for called me back and both left pretty much the same message. Yes! They are familiar with it and among gay men..(Right now I haven't asked any gay women..) it IS used all the time..NO, it is not thought of as derogatory by either of these guys or their friends..
So...I stand corrected on it's usage and commonmess in it's usage...(They just never saw fit to share it with me!!!..LOL)
I still have this little teeny tiny feeling that there is a SMALL element of derog! So, sue me.
If it turns out that down the road this becomes a thorne in someone's side, I'd love to know about it...

I apologize to you, dear Prego for putting you through my rant about this...you've beem extremely kind and considerate and Helpful, too!

Merci my dear Prego, Merci!

What I find funny about Andy Capp is that he used to punch out his wife in the olden comics before Smythe decided it might be wiser to have Flo punch him out instead. These concepts just seem a bit odd for the daily comics section!
